How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Our Treatment Care Guide Makes Preparing for Laser Hair Removal Easy

Preparing properly for laser hair removal helps ensure your treatment is both safe and effective. This guide walks you through exactly what to do before, during, and after your appointment—so you know what to expect and can feel confident every step of the way.

Facial Treatment

Before Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment

Proper preparation allows the laser to work efficiently while minimizing the risk of irritation or complications.

Arrive With Clean, Untanned Skin

  • Your skin should be at its natural baseline tone, with no active tan or recent prolonged sun exposure in the treatment area.
  • Avoid tanning beds, spray tans, and self-tanners before your appointment.

Skip Products on Treatment Areas

  • Please arrive with no products on or near the area being treated. This includes lotions, oils, deodorant, perfumes, makeup, and any self-tanning products.

Shave — Don’t Wax or Tweeze

  • Shave the treatment area approximately 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or thread between sessions. Laser hair removal requires the hair follicle to be intact in order to work effectively.
What Happens When You Arrive

What Happens When You Arrive

Your appointment begins with a thoughtful, safety-first process designed to protect your skin and maximize results.

A Safety-First Review

  • At every visit, your specialist will review your medical history and have you sign a consent form.
  • Before-and-after photos are strongly encouraged (though optional) to help track progress and fine-tune treatments over time.

Skin Assessment & Test Spots (If Needed)

  • If any product remains on the skin, you’ll be asked to gently cleanse the area before treatment.
  • Your specialist will assess your skin tone, recent sun exposure, and any signs of an active tan.

If there’s any concern about skin tone changes, a small series of test spots will be performed. If no adverse reactions occur, you’ll return in 72 hours for full treatment—at no additional cost. This step exists solely to keep your skin safe.

During Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

During Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

  • Most clients describe the sensation as a quick “snap,” paired with cooling air and warmth.
  • A mild burnt-hair smell may occur and is completely normal.
  • Discomfort is typically minimal to moderate. Your nurse will continuously check in and can adjust settings or apply comfort measures as needed.
What Happens When You Arrive

After Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment

Proper aftercare helps soothe the skin and protect your results.

Immediate Aftercare

  • Aloe and sunscreen may be provided if needed.
  • Apply cool compresses and aloe to reduce temporary redness or irritation.

Post-Treatment Guidelines

  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, and hot showers for two weeks after treatment. Warm showers are fine.
  • Avoid sun exposure to treated areas for two weeks, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when outdoors.

  • Seek medical attention for any severe or unusual reactions, such as painful burns or signs of an allergic response.
