How Laser Hair Removal Works

The Science Behind Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a clinically proven method for reducing unwanted hair by targeting it at the source—the hair follicle itself. While no treatment can guarantee 100% permanent hair removal, laser technology offers long-term hair reduction when performed correctly.

Most clients experience an 85–93% reduction in hair growth after completing a full series of treatments. Because hair growth is influenced by factors such as hormones, medications, and life changes (including pregnancy), individual results can vary. For optimal reduction, most clients complete approximately 10 treatment sessions, with some requiring more or fewer based on their unique biology.

Science

The Science of Hair Growth

To understand why laser hair removal works—and why it requires multiple sessions—it helps to understand the hair growth cycle.

Hair grows in phases, and laser hair removal is most effective during the anagen phase, when the hair is actively growing and still connected to the follicle. Because not all hairs are in this phase at the same time, treatments are spaced out to target hairs as they enter this optimal growth window.

This is why it’s completely normal to see hair growth between appointments. Each session builds on the last, progressively reducing regrowth as more follicles are treated during the correct phase.

How Laser Energy Targets the Hair Follicle

Contrary to common belief, laser hair removal does not target the hair itself—it targets the melanin (pigment) within the hair follicle.

Here’s how it works:

  • The laser emits a concentrated beam of light.
  • That light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair.
  • The absorbed light converts into heat energy.
  • The heat travels down the hair shaft and damages the follicle.

When a follicle is sufficiently damaged, its ability to produce new hair is significantly reduced or eliminated altogether.

Because the laser relies on pigment to deliver energy, hair that lacks melanin—such as blonde, white, gray, or red hair—cannot be effectively treated.

After treatment, some clients experience perifollicular edema (PFE)—a temporary swelling or redness around the hair follicle. This reaction is not a complication; it’s a normal and expected response that indicates the follicle has absorbed energy.

PFE typically resolves within a few hours to a few days and is considered a positive clinical endpoint of effective treatment.

Laser Hair Removal Is Considered Semi-Permanent

Laser hair removal permanently damages targeted follicles, but the body can develop new follicles over time due to hormonal changes or other biological factors. For this reason, laser hair removal is best described as semi-permanent hair reduction, not total hair elimination.

Many clients choose occasional maintenance sessions to preserve long-term smoothness, especially in hormonally influenced areas.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Take to Work?

Laser hair removal works gradually, not all at once. Because hair grows in cycles, visible results develop over a series of treatments, not after a single session.

After Your First Treatment

Within 1–3 weeks

The treated hairs begin to shed naturally from the skin. This is not regrowth—it’s the body releasing hair that has been disconnected from the follicle.

At this stage, many clients notice smoother skin and slower regrowth, though hair will continue to appear in untreated follicles.

After Several Sessions

Within 3-4 sessions

As sessions continue, more hair follicles are targeted during the anagen (active growth) phase. Over time, hair becomes finer, lighter, more sparse and slower to return

Most clients start seeing a noticeable reduction with progressively smoother results after each appointment.

Long-Term Results

After approximately 10 sessions

The number of treatments needed varies for each client. Additionally, occasional maintenance treatments may be recommended to preserve results—particularly in hormonally sensitive areas.

After completing the full recommended number of treatments, clients typically achieve 85–93% long-term hair reduction.
